The S5IS hasn't been reviewed by the independent reviewers yet so all you are going to get at this point are opinions. A better comparison might be an FZ50 vs. S5IS but your question at this time is a bit ahead of the power curve.

I use the camera for travelling and also for shooting my kids. I need very good pictures, fast, powerful zoom and can shoot video with sound. This is my first digital camera and I hope I don't make a bad choice. TQ

For your needs it's no contest. S5 for video alone. Video aside,, FZ8 all the way.

One person's opinion. While the S5 has not yet been independently tested the overall IQ of both should be similar. Ergonomics need to be considered. Try handling both cameras, use the controls and work through the menus. Pick the one that feels most natural. You probably should handle the S3 and the FZ50 as well.

I must agree with ac.smith. I handled the FZ8 and the S5IS - both reviewed and in the shops here in Europe and the FZ8 just was not right for me. As for functionality, both have their strengths although I personally also preferred the S5 on balance.

I cannot comment on the video functionality
