OK all,

I've posted 24 shots (12 each) taken by the S2 and the S5 within seconds of each other. This is not about my skill ( or lack thereof ) as a photographer, it is to allow people to view sample images from both. Simply go to my gallery site at either http://www.pbase.com/johngaltny or

http://community.webshots.com/user/johngaltny

and visit the Side by Side album.

Settings were matched on both cameras at the highest resolution, ISO 100, no exposure compensation, no color filters and matched metering sites within the frame. The only post process was to cut them to 7" on the long side and 96 ppi. No cropping, no sharpening, no levels, no nothing. The zoom does vary a bit but the last three are at Full/Half/None so take a look there if that concerns you.

Hope this is some use to someone.

John Galt-

Imust admit that I am not a super perfectionalist, who issophisticated and very choosy, but then as 20 year veteran as a professional Instructor of Digital Cameras,Imuch prefer the Canon S-5 images in your portfolio. So we have to make the assumption that Canon got it right. As long as you shoot at ISO 200 and below, you should not see the watercolor effect from the imbedded noise reduction algorithm.

Sarah,

It didn't hit me at first glance but after looking at the side by sides a lot, I think the S5 IQ is a bit better. This is useful for me since I tend to compose badly and then crop to a decent shot (actually you can see that in the side by sides where I didn't crop anything).

Nevertheless, the hot shoe and 2.5" LCD and face detection justified the upgrade for me. I'm not at all sure the difference in IQ would have gotten me up from my S2.

Anyway, thank for the comment. Hope to see you around in here.

JG

John-

Thanks for your post. I guess the reactions to the S-5IS vary from person to person. For me the hot shoe allowing for a really good external flash was an important issue.
