HI

I have not been able to get ahold of the professor for Intro to Dig Photo course this fall

so I am looking for some help

Need an affordable digital camera ($200+/-) for class assignments -

class description says has to be able to manually control aperture and shutter - and I would like a viewfinder as well as LCD

scouring the forum I have come up with the following list:

Olympus Stylus S800

Fuji F20 or F31

Casio EX Z750

Canon SD700 or 850

Cannon A570 IS or A710IS

Kodak 712 IS

If you have any experience with any of these or can help me prioritize - I would apprecaite it............

Your best bet will probably be the Canon A-570IS.

x,

Some of the cameras on your list don't have all of the features you need. The SD 700, SD 850, and F20 don't have aperture and shutter priority modes. The F20, F30 and S800 don't have a viewfinder. None of the cameras you've listed has RAW format...that may not matter for your course, but if you go further and get into post processing, you may want to have a camera with that capability.

Out of what's left on your list, I'd lean toward the A710IS...but...it may be a little outside your price range...$200 is somewhat limiting.

Good luck.

I agree with Sarah on the Canon A570IS. It meets all of your requirements, plus it uses AA batteries, is reasonably compact, has image stabilization, there are alot of accessories foritand well I just like the results I see from Canon A-Series cameras (including my A520).

I agree the price is limiting -

but hey - - not sure if my son is going to "stick with it"

i fyou know what I mean

Anyway -

While I am researching the differences betwee the Canon's you both recommended

Does anyone know offhand the key differences betwee the A510 and the A710?

Problems or issues with each I might need to be aware of or is there a dedicated CANON web place to go see what others say about them? Looking for it and cannot find one?

Thanks all again -- - got to make that decision today so I can get over the weekend!

:|

THANKS

ALL OF YOU - for your prompt help !!!!!

YOU WERE LIFESAVERS!!!!

The Canon A-510 does not have Image Stabilization and is the lowest cost entry level camera from Canon.

The Canon A-710IS has Image Stabilization, all the features of the A-570IS plus 6X optical zoom. It is above your budget and it is getting hard to find.

Xenonian,
Did you mean "what is the difference between the A570IS and the A710IS"? If so, I can tell yousome of thedifferences you may be concerned with:

Size: A570IS - 91.2 x 64.0 x 43.1 mm; A710IS - 97.5 x 66.5 x 41.2 mm
The A570IS is a little bit smaller, but just slightly.

Lens: A570IS - F2.6-5.5; A710IS - F2.8-4.8
The A710IS has a brighter lens on the telephoto end.

Image Processor: A570IS - DIGIC III; A710IS - DIGIC II
I'm not an expert on the differences, but obviously DIGIC III is newer. I believe the main advantages to DIGIC III are faster processing, better noise reduction, face detection, and increased battery life.

When I compare those two cameras, those are the main differences I see.
