I am very new to this forum. Just found it yesterday. After reading, it is the best I have found. Lots of helpful folks. Thanks in advance.

My wife is taking an extended trip, and we want to upgrade her CoolPix 4100, which is getting long in the tooth.

Here is a list of "wants" we have created, and would like to come as close as possible "latest tech camera".

1. About the size of the CoolPix 4100.

2. Optical view finder. (this is almost a must have, because she has never gotten fully comfortable without one)

3. AA batteries, or other "travel" options.

4. As much "user assist" software as possible. (Image stabilazation, (almost a must, a lot of current picturesget blurred), red eye, face detection, flash, etc.

5. As much zoom as we can get.

6. Manual control is not as important as "auto" and "ease of use"

7. Does not need to be water proof, but should survive a normal drop.

8. Pixels are not that important, but enough for sharpness . Most pictures will be posted on Internet albums for selection as 4x6.

9. Cost is not critical, but capturing the picture is.

10. All brands considered.

I know that no camera is everything, but your opinion would be appreciated on something close.

You might try looking at the Canon SD-800IS.
