Personally I want to see some new FF from sony. That way we may see >2k bodies from canon and nikon. That would be good for the consumers.

Zeiss are happy to make lenses for pretty much everybody. It's what they do best, and they have a deservedly good reputation for it.

Unlike Canon and Nikon, or even Pentax and Olympus, Sony don't have great lens-making heritage.

Zeiss politely try to make lenses available for just about any camera they think they can sell enough lenses for to make a profit. But they are careful about not stepping on anyone's toes. Unlike Sigma and Tamron for example who have a more aggressive reverse-engineering approach.

So the rumour that Sony is getting out of the FF business may or may not have substance to it. The Zeiss lenses for Sony now making their way into production were put into the engineering pipeline at least 6 months ago, probably more like 12-18.

We'll just have to wait and see where this all goes.

First, Sony owns the lens manufacturing facilities and the technology formerly owned by Minolta, and probably continues to employ many of the same people. Some of that Minolta heritage must surely have rubbed off on Sony.

In addition, while Zeiss makes lenses for Canon, Nikon, Pentax, etc., they don't actually make lenses for Sony. They design(ed) them, they test and certify them, but Sony actually makes them. That should do something toward boosting Sony's lens-making heritage.

And remember that Sony makes, and has made, some of the best video cameras in the world, and has made outstanding lenses for them as well. Just because they don't have they're own still-camera lens-making heritage doesn't mean they don't have an illustrious lens-making heritage of some kind.

... which is likely to be a factor in their not making AF lenses for anybody. (Remember that the AF lenses for the A-Mount are actually made by Sony.)

Absolutely. But I remind you that Sony introduced the A900 just prior to Photokina '08, and we are coming up on Photokina '10.

Indeed. IIRC Sony has been making videocams (and their lenses) for about 40 years, which is rather longer than some other surviving players in the imaging business. Sony started making still cameras almost 30 years ago. They've been at this for awhile.
