I'm looking for a fixed lens camera, 8x to 12x zoom, 6-10 Megapixel, under $600, image stablization is not necessary, with manual rings for both zoom and focus as opposed to a 'rocker' switch which controls a motor within the lens as with 95% of the non SLR camreas.

I have come across these so far;

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonicfz50/

Any other choices out there?

Elsewhere, it was reported the 9100 is noisy compared to the 6000/6500 due to the increase in the number of pixels with the same size chip.

As an owner of the S-9000 and the S-6000, I can tell you that the S-9000 and S-9100 have an older and less capable imager when compared to the newer S-6000.

So your observation is correct.

video,

I was merely responding to your question, not making a recommendation...here or elsewhere.

What is the general opinion of the Panasonic DMC-FZ50 or similar cameras from Panasonic (same league with the Fuji)?

The major issue with Fuji is that damn small XD card. Though not as bad, the SD card I'm not crazy about either. I perfered a CF though I haven't found any camera that fit the bill. Did I miss something?

Fuji S9100 (S9600 in Europe) takes CF as well as xD cards.

Panasonic DMC-FZ50 is quite noisy at higher ISO, nice camera though.

Interesting. I see it's a older camera w/ only a 6x zoom.

It's a very good camera if you can find one new, the only reason I don't own it anymore is because someone offered me a dSLR for it and that sparked a forest fire
