Holy cow! That's a lot of information! One enthusiastic vote for Canon! Thank you.

*CLEARLY* the 40D

The single most technology, that I really like with canon, hence my screen name is iSAPPS. Which means "Intelligent Scene Analysis based on Photographic Space"
I really hate to burst your bubble, but every modern cameras has this feature... already :-)

-> The canon system uses 35 AE zones for this; However the new D300 uses 1005 metering zones for their Scene Recognition System, on top of that the Nikon can 'track' with their with closely spaced 51 AF points (which trump the 40D by a factor of 5 of 9 losely spaced AF sensors) by color from theses 1005 points - Ditto with the Sony A-700 which also boost more features than the 40D

BTW I'm also a Canon guy with a 10D and the 1d MrkII...
With cameras in this category it's not the automation in the camera that makes the difference, but it's usually the 'grey matter' of the person behind it

I'm also a Canon user (5D) but let's be clear - the D300 is clearly a better camera (on paper at least until we see some reviews) than the 40D. It's also quite a lot more expensive so that's what you would expect.

Another theoretical vote for the D300 as on paper it shows to be the better of the 2 by quite a mark.

Thank you all for your opinions and lively comments. Regarding my grey matter....it is forever evolving when it comes to photography. I'm very aware that it is my 'eye' rather than the camera's that will eventually determine the quality of a photograph. But do love shopping for the gear! Thanks again.
