They are both good lenses. The difference is the focal length (and the cost).

What do you want to shoot?

And, perhaps this topic would have bben better posted in the Nikon Lensesforum.

Thank you for the reply. I think the 55 - 200 mm vr is good enough for me.

What I am shooting I don't know. I am at the learning curve here.Butfor sure the kit lens comes with theD40 is not good enough.

The reason I look into this lens is because in Canada they sell the pricing was so high and don't make sence to me. 55 - 200 vr they ask for 339.99 + tax and at State is 249.99 (36% higher)

Costco.com only have the 70 - 300 mm vr selling for 499.99 and other store at state selling for 649.99 so I through maybe the 70 - 300 mm is better buy. I am going to Montana this weekend. I have to shop shop and shop and I don't think I have spare time to hunting for the lens.

I don't know how many people here are Canadian. But what a shame. I check out a lot of product and we are paying at least 25 - 46% highter here.

I am search the internet now and looking for somestores selling Nikon Lens in Montana Helena and go from there.

Thanks !

How is the kit lens not good enough?

The kit lens and the two telephoto lenses you mentioned are all relatively dim, so if you're trying to do some low light or indoor sports photography, neither of the telephotos will be an improvement. For outdoor sports and wildlife photography, the 70-300 will probably be better than the 55-200. For portraits, the kit lens is probably the best.

That's why I asked what you want to shoot.

Hello,

The kit len have nothing wrong with it. But while testing zooming and taking a picture of a tree behine my house. It not far enough to what I wanted to.

So I guess I need another Lens like 55 - 200 mm might help. Or even a 300 mm

I usually using a camera for family photo. But on my last trip to disneyland with my kids. I just notice that regular digital camera will not help. Since I trying to take a picture of my kids on the ride and they are too far away.

I am planning to go to Montana Helena for shopping. See I can pick up this lens down there. Since there is no way I can get them at that price in Canada (not even close).

I only own the D40 a little bit more thata month. I was very heppy with the test picture I took compare to point and shoot camera.

If the 55 - 200 mm vr is good enough for you, you can choose one at a deal site. Sometimes the deal price has a huge difference with the retail price. I usually go to ebay, amazon, dealstudio, whatever. I just got Nikon 55-200mm lens for $170 there, I think it's worthy, and I just paid what I got. you can try

That link is not to the VR version of the 55-200. Beware.
