I am about to make my first Digital Camera purchase and have narrowed my thinking to the compact-superzooms:

Canon SX100IS or the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3.

Does anyone have any real world experience or suggestions about either of these cameras?

A list of the Pros and Cons of each would really help.

I do realize that the Canon just came out this month, but I'm sure someone must have played with one already.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I don't have real experiece, but have read some reviews about the SX100. I like it because it has solid Canon performance, takes regular AA (or rechargeable batteries). And it allows more creative control (manual aperture/shutter) in your photography.

Oh and if you're concerned about the 10x optical zoom not being enough. It's not as bad. Anything more, and you loose a lot of light and shakiness increases so you have to increase shutter speed or ISO setting. Not very practical unless you need to do a lot of high zoom shooting. Also Canon has the 'safe-zoom' feature, which basically allows you to do digital zoom without extrapolation IF you shoot at lower than maximum resolution. So at 5MP on the SX100, you get a maximum zoom of 16x without detail loss. 26x at 3MP...etc.

It is most probably just me personally, but I really like to have the option to use an optional optical viewfinder when the LCD screen is "washed out" by bright sunshine.

I own a Panasonic TZ-3 that I hardly ever use just because of the lack of an optical viewfinder.

I note that the Panasonic has a little more wide angle @ 28mm vs the SX100's 36 mm.

I'm just a newb, and don't know what other criteria are important.

both of these are what I'm looking to buy - good zoom, point and shoot, not quite as compact as wife would like....
