That's a very open-ended question. The answer very much depends on what you plan on taking pictures of, in what lighting conditions, etc., etc. Also, I believe that it's impossible to buy a D40 without the 18-55 kit lens, so you'll already have that... aside from being slow, it's actually a pretty sharp lens with generally good image quality.

What are you looking for? Wide angle? Telephoto? Large aperture?

What do you wnat to shoot? Landscapes/Cityscapes? Sports/Action/Wildlife? Indoor/Low-light? Portraits?

I use the Nikon D-40 with a two lens combination.

Nikkor 18-55mm
Nikkor 55-200mmVR

The 18-55mm is the kit lens sold with the D-40 here in the USA. The 55-200mm is an excellent buy at under $(US) 200.00. Both lenses are excellent and have very good image quality, although they are not exceptionally bright (wide aperture) lenses.

I'm just looking for an add on lens apart from the 18-55mm so it gives me enough room to experiment. I'm looking at a wide angle or a telephoto whichever one gives me the best pictures for the budget I have.

IMO the best budget lens for the Nikon D-40 is the Nikkor 55-200VR lens (around $(US) 200.00). When you purchase a Nikon D-40 in the USA, it automatically comes with the Nikon 18-55mm lens. You cannot buy the D-40 without a kit lens. The Nikon 18-55mm kit lens will give you a 27mm (in 35mm terms) wide angle. The Nikon 55-200mm VR lens gives you IS and a reach all the way out to 300mm (in 35mm terms). I often use the 55-200mm lens as a walk around lens. It is an excellent lens and priced right around $200 with VR!

Happy Thanksgiving!
