You might want to reconsider a bit on the Canon A-550. It is only a 4X optical zoom camera. The Nikon S-10 is a capable camera, but if I were to have my choice, it would be either the Canon S-3, or the Panasonic FZ-8.

Perhaps if you shared with us more information about the kind of photos that you like to take, we can make a better reccommendation for you.

is that in preference to Canon s5 and various newer panasonics? (FZ18, FZ50), and what do you think of sony h7??

I suggested the Canon S-3 because it would be the lowest price, and it is widely available internationally. The Panasonic FZ-18 is an excellent ultra zoom, but more expensive. I would not recommend the Sony H-9, but would suggest instead the H-2 or the H-5 models.

Yes, the H-2 and the H-5, in my personal opinion, and after extensive testing, do produce better image quality than the H-7 or H-9.

thanks Sarah; if price isn't the issue, would you rate the panasonics higher than the sony, and if so which one would you prefer (got the feeling you'll say the FZ18), bit worried about this "noise" problem, spoiling my pictures.

(however, nice weather photographer as I am, unlikely to need to go beyond iso100-200, specially thinking about my upcoming safary in july when I want to take lots of nice wildlifepictures, so need this zoom to be quite good)
