I use two DSLR's professionally, but for me the most important thing about a P&S camera is wide angle. For that reason alone I carry the Ricoh Caplio GX100 which is 24/72mm and a very useful camera. It's the only P&S I could find with so wide angle a lens.I reason that if I am using the P&S it is impromptu work and likely to be close up so a long lens isn't important. I have enough long toms for the SLR's! If that isn't suitable, the Caplio R7 has 28/200 which would make a very good holiday snap camera.

The GX100 and other similar suggestions are really the type I'm looking for, only a little cheaper. Just like you said huge zoom isn't a concern as I've got the glass for the DSLR to take care of that but the close and wide is really what I'm looking for as well as pocketable and most of those huge zoom ones like 28/200 are a bit bigger than my pockets.

So something like this just perferably less than 200 or 300 dollars although I do like the specs on that especially the f/2.5-4.4
