Presently I have a VGA camera, an Agfa ePhoto CL18, that I use for eBay auctions. I can power it over a standard USB cable with no batteries installed, and I can control it from the PC (take shots, delete pics, etc.) via its TWAIN driver. Most of the time this camera just sits on the tripod and operates that way for me.

Except that it's only 640x480 resolution.

I'd like to pick up a used 2MP camera from a mainstream manufacturer that will do the same things for me. Many are available on eBay for $30 or less, but as I've dug into the specs/manuals for a number of them, I find that many do not support power-over-USB.

I would be happy to have your recommendations and avoid some laborious digging!

What you're describing is a webcam.

Take a look at http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/we.../&cl=us,en

Before I got the Agfa a few years ago, I did use a webcam to capture some stills. But the Agfa looks like (and bills itself as) a digital camera, though also doing duty as a webcam and video clip capturer.

It sounds like you're saying that being powered by USB when connected to a PC is not a common digicam feature. If that's the case, what about cameras that recharge their batteries by USB?

(Because I do take the camera off the tripod occasionally and go snap a few shots elsewhere, I am indeed looking for a camera and not a webcam.)
