I've been using a Powershot A70 to shoot pics of sculptures and other small art and models but it recently was lost. I need a replacement - ideally below $400. I also have a young family and would like the camera to double as a camara for shooting trips.

I've been looking at the A570is, but I am not sure if I am biased towards Canon at the expense of ignoring a better option.

How about some other slightly more expensive Canon cameras - the A720 and the SX100? They would both give you more zoom and are well within your budget.

Virtually every Canon and every other reputable manufacturer's P&S between $130 & $400 will meet your fundamental requirements. Caveats: If the art objects are < 2.5"you'll have to pay attention to image size at minimum focus,if they have special lighting requirements then will the camera handle that? and finally if family outings are picnics, hikes, amusement parks (not night sports) most will do fine. Night sports moves you entirely out of P&S cameras.
