i'm an amateur photographer looking for a simple camera (i'll mostly be using the auto functions) to take pictures of my family, friends, and landscapes. i don't need anything very special but i'd like something that looks a little older aesthetically. cheesy, i know, but i want something along the lines of the Ricoh GR Digital II. it has the retro stylings of an older film camera but with new functions. problem is, according to steve's review, it's more for the photo enthusiast and excels in manual functions, which i won't be using so the higher price tag doesn't seem worth it for me to invest. is there an alternative style-wise, for cheaper?

thanks all!

I don't think there's anything relatively inexpensive that has the old 35mm/rangefinder styles - generally, folks who want that look are willing to spend the $$ and use the manual controls.

Of the top of my head, the digicams that most look like "cameras" are the Canon Powershot A series, and for $450 the G9. More importantly, both are darn good cameras.

I really like the looks and feel of the Nikon P50 - and it's a pretty good camera.

Unfortunately, most Nikon digicams suffer from poor performance, particularly shot-to-shot times and flash recycle times. The P50 is also lacking IS but is cheaper.

The Nikon P5100 has that more "classic" styling and IS, although again performance suffers in comparison.

Why not see if you could find a Canon G-5 on E-Bay.

I thinkthe fuji S-700 looks kinda like a 35 mm. A smaller, newer 35 mm. I also like the feel of it.

My A2 also looks kinda like a "real" camera. It is certainly as heavy as an old film 35mm or heavier. A nice thing about it is it's focus and zoom operate like a 35mm's in that they are operated via lense rings which is rare in point and shoot digitals. Ofcourse the focus can be left on manual, if you prefer.

If this is what you look for, nothing beats Leica M8 :-), not cheap though, but aesthetically pleasing:
