My choice is LiIon in most circumstances. Their higher energy density means a smaller lighter camera. The only exception would be if one were likely to be away from ac power for weeks at a time.

My Z612 uses a LiIon rechargeable or a non-rechargeable Li battery called CR-V3. I have two rechargeables and twoCR-V3 to back up the rechargeables. The LiIon's are good for 300-350 shots apiece and when I shoot an airshow or other all day event I go with both fully charged. Never really had to use the CV-R3's in an actual photo situation.

Power-

I own the Panasonic FZ-18, the Olympus SP-560, the Fuji S-8000, and the Sony H-9. My choice would be the Nikon P-80. It is another new 18X optical zoom camera, but it also has a larger imager and 10mp.

I have only owned my P-80 for just two days, but I am very impressed with its overall performance, as it, at least for me, surpasses the other 18X cameras that I own.
