I am looking at the Canon SX100IS (or similar) to purchase. I am disappointed there is no review of it on Steve's Digicams. I have loved the Canon PowerShot line for a while and like this camera, but am weary to buy without a professional review of it. Alternatively, I would consider another camera with similar megapixels (8.0mp) and zoom (10x optical). I like the super zoom ability and also like cameras using AA batteries as I have a slew of AA rechargeables and two great chargers.

If there is anyone out there with an educated opinion of this camera (or a similar one), I would love to hear from you!! Thanks!!

I used the Canon SX-100 for several weeks and was disappointed with it. I ended up purchasing a Sony H-3 and have been very happy with it. It has an excellent flash range from the built in flash and it is a very capable camera if you can do without an OVF. It is also about the same price.

The Sony H-10 is now replacing the H-3 and it has an even larger LCD screen.

The Canon S5 has the same specs as the SX100 you mentioned, but costs about twice as much (over here in South Africa at least). It is however a very good camera. 12X optical zoom gives you great reach. Its easy to use and gives you access to all the manual settings.
Iso is usable up to 200 I would say.
It uses x4 AA batteries.
Its in the same class as the Sony H series and Panasonic FZ8 or FZ18.

It has a great swivel LCD screen. I can honestly say that a swivel LCD is a must have. I think the sony also has one, but I'm not sure.

I had the Canon S2, which was stolen, and after re-doing all of the research I did 3 years prior, I decided to get the S5, which is basically the same camera.
