Well...I did it. Today I got my new Sony A200.

Thank you all for your help and advice.

JimC - thanks a lot for your detailed and informed "biased" replies (kidding!).Much appreciated!

Now I need to figure out how to play with my new "toy"

Do you guys think I need 3 year exended warranty( Sony has 2 yrs parts and labour) now. Extended warranty for 3 yrs is $70. Is it worth it?

Congrats on the camera! Let us know how you like it.

I don't know about the extended warranty. I normally don't get one myself.

Congrats on your new camera...I'm sure you'll get a lot out of it.

I also was not big on extended waranties, but I recently damaged my KM 5D and had to bite the bullet and buy a new camera. I decided on the A700 (partly because it was such a good deal) and went ahead and purchased Best Buys' extended accidental damage warranty for $149. It extends the manf warranty 3 years, but also covers damage or replacement in case I have another bonehead moment (odds are in favor of this).

I guess it's like insurance, you hope you don't have to use it, but it's good to know it's there.

P.S. You're right about Jims "biased" replies. He's a major reason why I went with my KM 5D and continued to be a great source of info while deciding whether to stay with Sony and get the A700.

I hear you. From my past experience, each time I purchase extended warranty - I never have to use it, but then if I don't get one - something always happens.

Two things to add:

1.) Do you plan to have the camera for the full 3 years or more or will you want to upgrade before then.

2.) I have never had a digital camera that long myself and never gotten an extended warrenty. I figure by that time I will upgrade to a newer camera.

There is no way I will upgrade after 3 yrs after spending over $600 and this is just the beginning.! I still need to getother accessories.

I gave my first p&s to my son for a camping trip and his friend "dipped" it in the lake. These things happen.

I honesty don't want to spend more $$ on warranty although when you need it, its great. In the meantime,I am keeping my fingers crossed!
