I agree that Greg's images are impressive, but while the vignetting in the shots of the sculpture is a pleasant artistic addition, I think it's something that should be avoided when shooting paintings. And while some vignetting seems to be present in the shots of the paintings, it's hard to tell because it could also have been a characteristic of the original painting. I think it's that kind of situation you might want to avoid: Do you want to create your own "artist's impression" of the original artist's work, or do you want to create a faithful image of the painting?

I also don't think you should use flash, though I doubt you'd be permitted to do so.

That means a fast lens and image stabilization (if you can't use a tripod.)

The cheapest way to do that is a Sony A200 ($500 with the kit lens) plus a used Minolta 50mm f/1.7 (~$100 on eBay or KEH.com.) (Which, btw, is cheaper than a Canon or Nikon dLSR with a fast lens and a good sturdy tripod.) (A 50mm f/1.4 would be better, but that 1/2 f-stop costs ~$250 used or $350 new.) The Pentax K200D might also be nice, but it's $500 ($600 - $100 rebate) for the body only, plus the 50mm f/1.4 for $200 (total: $700 vs. $600 for the Sony with the 50mm and the kit lens.)

For another $100, you can get the A300 which adds 'Live View', allowing you to compose with the LCD display (something that might come in handy for what you want to do), or the A350 which adds 'Live View', a 14MP image sensor (instead of the 10MP in the A200 or A300), but foregoes the kit lens.

For what you're doing, I'd go with the A350 for the extra resolution, and maybe add the kit lens for general photography.
