Hi,

Does anyone know a non-dslr camera that supports tethered shooting?

The goal is to get an image to a folder every 5 or 10 sec., I plan to use osx's automator, but if the camera is pc only that's fine too.
Because it has to be silent, a dslr is not an option I think. Having said that, any hints on quiet dslr's also very welcome..

Many thanks for your help!

Have you considered a camera with a built in intervalometer? That way, you can take shots every 5 or 10 seconds without even being hooked up to a computer.

Another option is to use a webcam. They can take still images at reasonable resolutions, and can't store them locally.

Several Canon Powershot models support remote capture - camera controlled by USB connection to a PC. Here is a third party software package that offers a lot more capability than the basic features that come with the cameras. You can view their website to see the list of Powershot cameras that support remote shooting, and those that do not.

The basic features that come with the cameras will perform the tasks you are looking for.

Thanks Tcav, but I need the images to go directly to the computer. The webcams i've tested - even 3 MP ones - just dont get as sharp as a still camera.

And thanks Denncaid, that list was exactly what I was looking for! I'll go through it now.
Cheers

Glad it helped. The list is not up to date. For example, the SD890IS does NOT support remoting capture.
