With an auto-only camera like the Canon SD750, you can't expect great shots in low light without a flash, especially since the SD750 doesn't have optical image stabilization.

A camera with optical image stabilization and full manual controls will give you much more flexibility in taking pics under difficult lighting conditions. Naturally, a DSLR will give you the best photos under those circumstances, but even a modestly priced camera like the Canon A590IS (which has optical image stabilization and full manual controls) will give you much better low-light pictures than you're currently getting with your SD750.
