I'm "trading backwards" from a Pentax *ist DS as I find I'm getting fed up with carrying around two cameras in order to get a video mode which I do regulalry use on the compact.

I'm also coming to the conclusion (having looked at reviews and sample images) and just cleaned the sensor on my Pentax again, that I can live with the reduction in absolute image quality for the other benefits of the latest bridge cameras.

But which one, the Fuji at £400 (UK street) withthe bigger sensor and less noisy high ISO performance, or the slightly cheaper Panasonic with the TTL flash hotshoe.

Any other options with a manually zoomable lens and a hotshoe- either availalbe now or just over the horizon.

TIA

You might want to wait and see what the new Canon SX1 IS will be able to do. It was accidentally (?) announced on popphoto last week for a few hours, then disappeared. It's limited info included "10 megapixel 20x 28-560mm EVF with an articulated LCD and EX-compatible hotshoe" for about $499. There are a lot of folks anxiously waiting for the official announcement from Canon. Photokina is coming soon, so they believe it will be just prior to that or during it.

Yup - that might be good, depending on its sensor size. Of course the SX designation would seem to put it firmly into consumer territory rather than a replacement of the S5is (which already fails on the manual zoom criteria)

There's also the question of what the 4/3 people are going to do - announcements seem to point to interchangeable lenses but who knows if Panasonic have an FZ60 up their sleeves. If the FZ28s Venus IV engineimproved the noise over the FZ18, there's still a better FZ50 somewhere out there.

Normally, I would take the view that there's always something better round the corner and if you kept waiting, you'd never buy any electronic device - but as Photokina is literally days away I will try and keep my credit card in my wallet for a bit longer.

They're getting fed up with me in Jessops as I'm visiting almost daily and trying the two side by side for "hands on" feel - currently, the Fuji is my favourite.
