Hi to all. I have just registered at Steve's. I am yet to buy a camera for myself but I am looking to gift one to my dad. This will be the first digital camera in the family aswe havent beenclick happy.I am looking at the following.

Canon SD950 ( Canon brand)

nikon s610/ nikon S710 ( nikon brand but did falter to canon on google search)

Panasonic TZ5 (10x optical zoom, 28mm lens and HD videos)

Samsung NV24HD (OLED screen, 24mm wide angle and HD videos)

Samsung NV100HD (bigger lens, 24mm wide angle, HD videos)

Sony W300 ( liked the pic quality the best, bigger lens)

Sony W170 ( 28mm lens, value for money)

I would want something that has got a good screen (NV24?TZ5?), with good quality pictures (W300, SD950, S710) and is easy to use as point and shoot.

Budget is about $250- $300.

Which is recommended?

Take a look at the Fuji Finepix S8100FD.

Has a 27-486mm fujinon lens, 2.5 inch LCD.

Has both mechanical and optical IS, including IS while shooting movies.

It only weights 5 1/2 ounces!

Can be bought for $310 on Amazon.com with free shipping:

The S8100fd is a good camera but it's an ultrazoom that weighs 405 grams including batteries (14.3 oz).

I don't think the OP is looking for something that large.

Sometimes the smaller cameras are hard to hold and difficult to press the buttons.

14.3 ounces is still pretty light!

Looking only at this aspect I would say the Panasonic is tops. Canon next best. Samsungs worst.

On the other hand: If either of them wants tomake something of a studyof photography. Or just loves to put a gadget through its paces, then I would saythe Sony controls are slightly more advanced.

Short version: My list would quickly come down to the Canon or Sony W170. The Panny TZ5specs look great, but it's mainly a daylight camera.Does work Ok indoors, but I like the results from Canon and Sony better.

Terry, thanx very much for the suggestion. thefuji looks great but the weight would be too much. I am not looking for more than 300 grams fully loaded with battery and card.

in my eyes (amateur) the pictures from a Sony W300 looked best at www.digitalversus.com followed by S710 and Samsung NV24HD followed by Canon SD950IS. I maybe wrong and missing out the real things though.

$350 is the max budget.

Did you check out Steve's Digicams recommended cameras list?

http://www.steves-digicams.com/best_cameras.html

Usually if you stick within these you do pretty well.
