Our family camera got stolen (Canon a75 that i loved)

I was very interested in the Canon sd990 but when i was reading the review i saw that words like "pleasing" and "above average" ware used to describe the picture quality, and in the sd880 the review spoke of excellent pic quality.

can u help me decide about the sd990 ? do u think that the sd880 is better ?

other camera suggestion will be good too.

Welcome to Steve's!!

For me, I like the spec better on the 880. I personally couldn't cope with a lens that is not the equivalent of 28mm or wider, so the 990 with it's 36mm equivalent is just too long. However if you like to shoot subjects further away then the longer lens might be better for you and also the higher res can help here as you can crop down more.

Both do a pretty good job with noise handling, I only have one point and shoot in my camera line up (Panasonic TZ5) and both the Canon cameras give much better results.

So personally I would go with the 880 for my needs. I really can't see who needs 14+ megapixels from a P&S, I don't even work with such resolutions for Pro work so it is all a part of the bigger numbers = better cameras marketing game.
