An entry leve dSLR and an external flash will put you over your $600 budget. But many dSLRs are available that will allow you to squeeze a 50mm f/1.7 or f/1.8 lens intoyour budget so you can get started with available light photography.

I think the Sony A200 with a used Minolta 50mm f/1.7 is the best deal. The 50mm will be stabilized on the Sony body. The only other option for a dSLR is the Canon XS with the Canon 50mm f/1.8, which is cheaper and has 'Live View', but the 50mm won't be stabilized.

If you want an entry level dSLR with an external flash, I noticed that B&H has the Pentax K2000 kit on sale for $599. The kit includes the camera body, the kit lens and a basic flash - it might be an option. You can always add other lenses later on.

Yes. Sorry. I forgot about the Pentax K2000, which comes with an externalflash.
