For Christmas I'm asking my parents for a digital camera. The camera will probably see the most use at the beach, to be specific, mostly used in the ocean. I'd like something with that will produce good high quality images and pretty good video. I don't want them to spend a whole lot of money on this, maybe between 300-400 dollars. I've looked at the olympus stylus 1030sw and 1050sw and was not impressed. I started looking at the pentax w60 and it looked to be a little nicer than the olympus. Are there any other cameras out there that are waterproof, freeze proof, 8 megapixel + in my price range?

This is a rather limited/special use field. Image-wise the best out there appears to be the Pentax W-60. If you want to go beyond your budget, then consider specialized "dive" cases etc. But the price begins to spiral in a hurry. Here is a W-60 photo.

Yes, you have only 2 options: Olympus SW or Pentax W. I Have Pentax OPTIO W60, because it's cheaper than Olympus, images are more clearer and the lenght of movies is limited only with SD memory card (Olympus 640x480/30fps 10 seconds of video only).

I very pleased with my W60: Image quality under water is excellent (for mini P&S naked camera) and you can use optical zoom while recording movies.

2 pictures from my last hollidays in Sharm El Sheikh (Egypt):

Some pictures were taken even 10 meters deep and one (not published) even 12 meters deep. Instead of only 4 meters, my W60 survived couple of times for 90+ seconds on 8 meters and 60+ seconds on 10 meters.

Thanks for the excellent examples, Primus-

As you mentioned there are only two camera options in this category. Like you, I happen to believe that the Pentax W-60 is the better of those two camera options.

If you want to take some videos as well, I'll recommend the Sanyo VPC-CA8.

Videos made with Pentax OPTIO W60 are OK too. Check some of my UW videos here:

primus wrote: I believe the W60 did a good job for the price. What I love the CA8 is the rotation lcd screen! I could take the pictures and videos in some pretty difficult angle. I think price is pretty reasonable.
