Im going to be looking for a camera that is probably going to take a little beating. Something I can throw a carabiner on and hook it to my backpack (climbing, hiking, mountaineering etc...)

Waterproof would be nice just for that extra security, one less thing to worry about.
Im not sure if I could just throw a decent rubber case on anything and it would be fine or if some might be better than others...
Its nothing that would be totally submerged in water, just needs to hold up to rain and snow.

I appreciate any input,

Thanks

oh, and just from what ive looked up so far online I really like the Olympus stylus 1030 SW. It seems like it would hold up for what I need it to and take a beating as well...

I've posted almost the same question here, so you might want to take a look at what people suggested to me there. And your other alternative would be the Pentax W-60.

If not that, there are waterproof cases you can buy. They're not availabe for all cameras, though.

btw, Im curious as to what you ever decided on your end? did you end up getting a new camera or did you just stick to what you already had?

oh, and another thing I was thinking about. what I necessarily need a "waterproof" camera if you are, for example, hiking up a mountain, and its snowing, and you have somewhat wet gloves on...are you going to be able to take photos, handling the camera with the wet gloves etc, without damaging most point n shoot cameras?

Im not sure how well sealed "non-waterproof" cameras are and if that would affect them or not.

firstascent-

the Pentax W-60 can be taken underwater to a depth of 5 meters (according to the camera's documentation)to take photographs, see the attached photo. So yes, it does really meet strict waterproof standards.

I won't be taking any actual under water photos, but it is a safe feeling knowing it can handle the weather. Thanks for posting the photo though!

As to your first question, I haven't yet decided which camera I'm going to buy.

To the latter, from my experience with the A530, it survived my hike. I didn't submerge it in water or hold it up in blasting rain, but it continued to work. Most P&S cameras will still work under what you mentioned, in my own opinion.

Don't take this as it is, though, because my A530 is now useless and I didn't subject it to snowy weather. Also, the whole back panel is now nice and clean as the color peeled away.
