I'm looking to get a replacement camera for my Nikon coolpix 5200. Overall, I've been incredibly pleased with this camera. However, I am studying abroad in a couple of months, and my 5200 is no longer performing its best, so I am looking for a P&S replacement for it.

Good maco is very important to me and a viewfinder is a must. I also need a camera that operates well is low-light situations (not a strength of the 5200) and does decent scene shots (IMO, the 5200 was best a macro with most other shots appearing too 'soft'.)

Currently, I'm looking at the Nikon s5100, Canon A720 and Canon SD890/850.
Does anyone have any thoughts/suggestions on these or other cameras?

Thanks!

I don't think that you will find any Canon A-720 cameras remaining on the dealers shelves. The Canon SD-890 is a good choice, but it falls down a bit when doing low light level shots. It does have a nice 5X optical zoom lens. You mention the Nikon s5100, but there is no such camera. Perhaps you mean the P series Nikon cameras?

Another camera to take a good look at is the Panasonic TZ-5. I can give you 10X optical zoom in a very small form factor, and it does pretty well in low light conditions. The attached photo was taken without flash in the floral department of our local super market, using an increased ISO sett of 800.

Yes, I did mean the Nikon p5100. Sorry!

Thank-you for suggesting the Panasonic TZ-5. I'll have to check it out in more detail, but I have heard that it has poor battery life. Have you found this to be true?

No, I have found the battery life to be normal (around 200 photos) rather than poor as you mentioned. It is no big deal at all. I can recharge the TZ-5's battery in about 2 hours and I have done it all over the world.

I'm not clear on thecamera size you'll consider. The various SLR-types are also in the P&S category. They all have electronic viewfinders, and most with pretty good macro capability.

I would like something compact, preferably with dimensions somewhat similar to the coolpix 5200: 88 x 60 x 36.5mm.

The Panasonic TZ-5 (in inches) is:

width - 4.1

Height - 2.3

Depth - 1.4
