I have narrowed my search down to the the A590 and the LZ8, but just cannot decide! I am a novice but am interested in making photography a hobby and am looking for something to get started with - for WELL under $200.00 (US)in case I end up just using it for family photos and such.

Opinions?

Hi and welcome to Steve's,

Both options are pretty good as they allow you to have some control over the camera so if you want to learn some more about the functions of photography as well as developing a photographic eye then that's beneficial.

If you haven't already you can check out Steve's reviews of there two cameras here and see some sample shots at full size too.

Hope this is a helpful start.

I actually own, use, and demonstrate both cameras in my digital camera classes. They both offer a lot of features for their price. However, my personal nod goes to the Canon A-590 IS.It seems to be an easier camera to handle, and much more flexible over its wide exposure range.

Please do keep in mind that the A-590 is no longer manufactured and that the inventory supply on dealer's shelves is being depleted rather rapidly. It will soon be gone just like the Canon A-720 IS is now completely not available.

Thanks so much for the information - I am really leaning toward the Canon. After reading the reviews, it looks like Steve kinda liked the Canon, too.

Now I've just got to check around for lowest price!

Hi Folks!

I bought my canon on New Year's Eve and so far, no complaints! I did pay a little more at Best Buy (129), than I could have if I had bought online, but I was too antsy and wanted it NOW! The weather here has been pretty crappy so I haven't been able to get outside to do much, but inside pics have been very satisfactory!

Thanks for all the input.
