have a canon a640 and would like to know what the present line of canons offers as a same level camera with just about all the features of my old one?

Unfortunately, none. After the A640 Canon issued the A650is, an improvement and a fantastic camera. But Canon stopped making the A500, A600 and A700 series of cameras about six months ago. At this point it's pretty clear that Canon has decided to limit its point and shoots to its small Elph cameras, fully auto A cameras, SX superzooms and only one high end compact, the G10. Canon has apparently decided that consumers do not want a sophisticated, reasonably priced compact camera.

The SX10is is an SLR-like ultrazoom, much larger and heavier than the A640. The SX110is is a compact ultrazoom and closer in size and weight to the A640 and, like the A640, has full manual exposure controls.
