The Nikons suffer from some common shortcomings. They have a poor autofocus system for sports/action/wildlife, and they don't have an internal autofocus motor so the selection of lenses, even Nikon's own lenses, is limited.

The Sony A300 also has 'Live View' and image stabilization in the camera body.

What types of photographs do you wnat to take, and how did you narrow down your selection to just these three cameras?

nikons are way too expensive than any other brand. yet still i prefer them. i think you should first choose your lens. d40 and d60 do not have autofocus in their body. that means you have to get afs lenses and they are expensive.
budget, lens then camera. (ıf you are really in to SLR's)

Then, of the three, I think the Sony A300 would be the best choice.

But an important factor in selecting a dSLR is how it feels to you. I suggest you try them out to see which one you feel comfortable with.

Nikon's are no more expensive than other brands. The D40 can be found for under $500 everyday. And yes, while they don't have focus motors in camera, the are many lenses available that do have focus motors, including third party vendors. Unless you're looking for bright primes, you will be able to find a lens to fit your need within most budgets, and there will even be a cheaper bright prime coming out in March. There are even consumer zooms with Vr...the D60 can be had with a two lens VR enabled kit. To say don't buy those cameras because of lack of lens selection just doesn't hold as much water as it did 2 years ago....it's really time to stop beating that drum. Now the camera does have some limitations...slower, less sophisticated AF most notably. That is a reason to possibly not buy the camera, depending on what you will be photographing. For everyday snapshots, most of the shortcomings will hardly be noticed.
