Good morning group,

There is nothing more confusing than shopping for a new digital camera when you don't know squat about photography except point and shoot. So let me introduce you to the newest of newbies...ME.

I am hoping by being a member of this msg board I can make a somewhat informed decision on which camera I want to purchase, I amtrying to decide between 2, and perhaps learn to use some the functions on which ever camera I choose.

I am trying to decide between the Canon Powershot SX10 IS with the 20x zoom or the Sony DSC-H50-B with a 15x zoom.

My main purpose for the camera I buy is to take pictures of my grandsons sporting events. Baseball season is fast approaching and I want to be camera ready.:G

Hi Glenda,

I've just moved this to the What Camera Should I Buy? section as you will probably get more replies to this question.

Good to have you on board.

I would also suggest looking at the Panasonic FZ28.

Mark

I haven't even considered a Panaonic because I know nothing about them at all, but I will have a look.......

......Okay I looked at the camera. I am not impressed with it's appearance. The site I was looking at had some pictures taken with this camera and to be honest I was not impressed with those either.

Had I not owned a Sony in the past and known what excellent pictures they take, I might have considered this camera, but so far from what I have seen on the web it does not hold a candle to what I have seen from the H50.

I am not totally ruling it out, I will keep researching, but so far I am still leaning toward the Sony.

Which site did you look at as this can have a big impact on the sort of results you get.

Here is a recent group test of the major players in this arena http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/q109superzoomgroup/ and the top 3 are the Canon, Panasonic and Sony. I personally have a Canon SX1 in my bag along with an easily pocketable Panasonic TZ5 and 3 Canon dSLRS. The only reason I went Canon in this case was that I wanted full HD and the extra range that the Canon has when shooting video as it can double it's equivalent focal length without losing quality.

If it hadn't been for that then I would have gone Panasonic.

To help you decide, here are sample photos from the H50is, SX10is and the FZ28:
