Default Digital zoom when shooting video problems

The Canon SD780 has 4000x3000 pixels for still images and can record HD video (1280x720). When filming, the optcal zoom is disabled but you can use digital zoom. Cosidering the number of pixels in the sensor, it would be possible to have approximately 4X digital zoom without loosing image quality by simply cropping the sensor. Is this the way it is done in the digital camera, or will the camera implement the digital zooming by interpolation of the 1280x720 frame?
