if the body you choose is independent of the "kit of lenses" and you plan to use it for a couple years when you start making a living. then you could reasonably justify going for the 7d over the 50d for its duel processors and 19pt autofocus.

What is your total budget - camera plus lenses?

for weddings, events, etc. the first lenses' that come to mind

24-70 2.8 (or 17-55 2.8, or a 3rd party 18-50 2.8 since you are using aps-c)
70-200 2.8 (or 70-200 4 IS, or a 3rd party 50-150 2.8 digi-only)

fast prime or 2, some good examples
28 1.8 (sigma 30 1.4 digi only)
50 1.4
85 1.8/100 f2

that kind of coverage would be a good start, your budget will determine which 1s you get.

well, the original plan was to start out with this package and buy a couple lenses on top of it. I would say if I were to get the linked package I could spend another 1000 on lenses give or take a couple hundred.

Also how is this for a flash below?

with a budget of ~3000-3500 you can get a heck of a better lens kit than the 17-85 and 70-300. neither will do you well for weddings/events. the 17-85 is a decent walkabout, but kind of soft. the 70-300 is not a great offering from canon, soft/slow.

body only (50d)- ~1100USD
canon 17-55 2.8 - ~1000USD
canon 70-200 f4 is or canon 70-200 2.8 non-is - ~1200 USD
canon 430ex - ~250

later you can pick up-
canon 28 1.8/50 1.4/85 1.8 will set you back 300-500USD

that is a heck of a better start than the aforementioned kit.

and don't buy at best buy. try something like bhphotovideo.com

sounds good.... i wasnt planning on doing any shopping at best buy... just using it as a resource.

thanks for all the input... i appreciate it and will consider it all.... how is bhphotovideo.com on manufacturer warranties? there not "gray" market right?

got any recommendations on a good canon flash?

it is possible to build a similar setup from tamron or sigma and save some money.

they both make 24-70/28-70ish 2.8s as well as 18-50ish 2.8s for crop bodies.
sigma makes a nice 70-200 2.8 as well as a 50-150 2.8 for crop bodies.

the sigma 30 1.4 is a sharp prime as well. similar price to the canon primes.

bhphotovideo is well respected. you can buy either full USA items, or grey market. they are clearly marked on the website.

again thanks for that!!!! I think for any kind of the zoom lens I am going to stick with Canon lens and primes I think I will venture out and consider sigma and the others out there.
