It depends, what do you want to shoot, what lenses are you considering, where do you think you might what your photography to progress to in the future, what is your budget, do you shoot with anything currently and if so what can't it do that is making you want to change?

That should better help to get recommendations for an informed decision.

There is no 'best overall' camera - it doesn't exist. Every camera and system has strengths and weaknesses. The types of photography you do may benefit from certain features. Those features may be a strength in one camera and weakness in another - or it might not matter at all.

Along the same lines, why do you want to buy a DSLR instead of another digicam? What is it about a DSLR you think will be of greater benefit than a digicam?

When we ask quesitons like this it's not because we're being difficult. It's because there is no single camera that is the right fit for every photographer. So the best way to recommend a solution is to know what your needs are and provide some advice on which cameras/dslrs/lenses might be best suited to fit those needs.

In addition to what both John and Mark have said, ergonomics play a big part. Both cameras you are looking at are fairly small (is this a priority to you?) and light. For some people that's great, while others would prefer a larger camera. They have different sized sensors - that can have an influence on the types of pictures you take as they have different characteristics, which may or may not influence your decision.

Both cameras are quite capable of taking excellent pictures, so you won't end up with a horrible camera. One might be more capable of meeting your needs, or perhaps it won't matter.

One thing to consider is lenses - what lenses are you going to want and how much do you want to spend on them? Do you care about auto focus or not? Pentax can use all Pentax lenses and they will retain whatever the capability the lens was made with so you can save money by buying top quality used manual focus lenses.

Personally I'm not a fan of buying from eBay but if you are happy that you will get the warranty and support expected then go ahead as you can save some money. Personally knowing I have a store to go back to if there is a problem counts for a lot so I would check and double check the situation.

As for the two cameras I don't have any experience of either and Steve hasn't reviewed both, however dpreview has them and you can look at some comparisons etc.

K2000 http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/pentaxk2000/page23.asp
E520 http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/pentaxk2000/page23.asp

In their comparison sections there isn't the 2000 against the 520 but there is 2000 against 420 and they say "The image quality of the E-420 and E-520 are essentially identical so you can work out how the E520 compares anyway".

I would read the conclusions carefully as this can be very telling. I would also look at more detail of the other cameras that are compared in these reviews as you will potentially better performance.

Not much to add to the excellent suggestions already made by several others, but will say that I have been a very happy user of the K-m (same as K2000) for several months now. You might want to look at some of the photos posted in the Pentax and the Olympus sections of this forum, to see what others have done with these cameras. In either case, you are sure to enjoy your new camera!

I think I'm going loco, I saw the K2000 one but it didn't look like the usual review format rather just the press release, if only I had scrolled down enough to see the next page lol.
