Thanks for all the advice. Yes, I have thought about the K-m. Maybe that's the way to go.

There might be an alternative solution in the Panasonic G1. This unit is a bit different in that it eliminates the mirror and shutter (so its similar to a P&S - but as far as I am concerned a real dSLR), but uses a 4:3 sensor, however utilizes a micro 4:3 lens mount thus the lenses are smaller and lighter. According to the specifications its about 22 oz (body, battery and lens) and that cuts the weight in half. The image stabilization is lens based, and there are a limited number of m43 lenses, but they have just added a couple more lately. That might reduce the size and weight of the overall "system", while providing stabilization and might be a workable solution.
