Why wouldn't you consider the Panasonic FZ28, Sony H50 or the HX1?

ra28-

You might want to hold off on your decision on an ultra zoom for a few more weeks. Panasonic is due to come out shortly with a replacement for their very, very successful FZ-28 ulta zoom which is now a year to 16 months old and has 18X optical zoom.

Based on what I've seen and heard round here and elsewhere, don't touch the Z1015; the Z1012 is a better buy (I have one and it's very good).

My local camera shop are enthusiastic about the Z980, but you should read all the posts round here about it as well. By all accounts the Panasonic FZ28 is a rather wonderful competitor.

So far, Panasonic has built some of the best super zoom cameras out there. It went from a 12x to an 18x lens practically w/o any image deterioration (as it occurred with Sony and Canon when they moved up from the 12x lens). Thus, I think Sarah makes a good point with regards to the FZ28 replacement. It may be wise to wait a bit to see what they come up with (24x is likely) and then make your decision. All I can say is that the FZ28 is a great super zoom and I'd spend some time checking it out before buying anything.
