One approach to a better viewfinder image (use a magnifying eyepiece).

Ok, Thanks, However I'm going to go with the Sony A230L over the 330 simply because I don't think the extra $100 is worth it to get a tiltable LCD w/ liveview. I'd rather have the better viewfinder, and the extra $100.

I just came back from Bestbuy. I looked at the Sony Alpha A230 and A330, and I loved them both. However I now feel confident that I don't want to spend the extra $100 for the tiltable screen with liveview. The viewfinder on the a230 was just too nice. I did notice that it did not focus closely on the subject I was shooting nearly as well as the Nikon D3000, but I think that may have to do with the lens/way the alpha was set up.

Anyways I will start looking for good deals on a Sony Alpha a230. So thanks to everyone for all the help. I really like this forum, its full of informative people.

The nikon d3000 might be good for you. Luckily this kit on amazon comes with all the accessories you will need including a memory card and case. I think its a good deal for under $600

Thanks but I'm going to go with the Sony A230 due to price. It's much more affordable.

Hi there, Adam-

Yes, I surely do agree. IMHO, the Sony A-230 has a lot of bang for the buck. That applies to the basic camera and a few lenses, not to the Sony line overall.

Have a great day.

Another very similar camera to the Sony 230 is the Pentax 2000 (or KM, same model just a different name for Europe). You can pick it up at Sam's Club with the kit 18-55 lens for $399 (an additional 3 year warranty is available for $40).

It has in body image stabilization just like the Sony. Pentax's kit 18-55 lens is one of the better kit lenses around.

Now Pentax has announced a new replacement called the KX in the last couple of weeks, same physical size with some slightly different features (including video, and different body colors), so this is close out pricing, that you can take advantage of.

Its not officially noted, but it appears that Pentax is probably using the same Sony 10MP sensor as the A230, so one that is very similar.

All the Pentax models are able to use any Pentax lens made over the last 30 years (K mount lenses) and with an adapter for the last 40+ years (M42 mount lenses). Third party lenses from Tamron, Sigma, Tokina are also available.

Just an idea since the pricing is so good...

Interested Observer-

That is a great price but I have some qualms about the KM/K-2000 camera. I used mine for 2 months and sold it.

I have had better performance and image quality from the Sony A-200/A-230 cameras than from the Pentax KM/K-2000. Perhaps it is just me, I am not really sure. The KM was such a vast comparison from my Pentax K-20 that the comparison was ridiculous. So, when I had a buyer, I unloaded it without hesitation. 'Just another user's experience.

I loved the camera size and functionality but the camera never really grew on me. As it now stands, you can purchase the Sony A-200/A-230 for about the same price +/- $50.00 if you shop around.

I agree with you Sarah, I think the A230 is the better choice.

Also Sony has a better "reputation" than Pentax, in my opinion.

I just bought the Sony Alpha A230! I am very happy, as this is my first DSLR and I feel a step into the world of photography. Butterflyphoto says 3-5 days to ship. I'll update this thread once I get it.
