Default DSLR For ~$500

Hey again, its me. You may remember from before, I said I was looking for a good super zoom camera. However I never quite found one that I was fully satisfied with.

So I decided I'd rather just buy a DSLR body, and eventually buy other lenses.

Anyways, So I'm looking a good DSLR in the $400-$600 range.

Here are my options so far:

-The Sony A230, and the Sony A330. I'm wondering if the A330 is worth the extra $150 since I seem to only be attracted to the bigger better viewfinder and the swivel screen. Besides that is there even a difference?

-Nikon D40 (Don't know much about it though)

-Nikon 3000 (Getting a tad bit too expensive though)

I'm open to other suggestions.

However NOT a Canon Rebel. My parents have one, and I've played with it a little, and I strongly dislike it. Its hard to operate, awkward to hold, and I haven't been to impressed with the image quality and the standard lens that it comes with is not very impressive. My Sony Point and shoot which only has a 5X Optical zoom is better.

As always, Thanks.

The A330 has a smaller (not larger) viewfinder compared to the lower priced A230. That's because the separate live view sensor in the viewfinder housing on models with Live View requires a smaller optical viewfinder in order to keep the size of the body more manageable in that market niche.

But, you can find a viewfinder magnifier if you go that route. Sony makes one now. See this article about it:

The D40 is an older 6MP model using a Sony 6MP CCD Sensor. It's still a well liked camera though. The Nikon D3000 uses a Sony 10MP CCD Sensor, as do the Sony A230 and A330 models; along with a number of other dSLR models like the Nikon D40x, D60 and some of the 10MP Pentax models.

adamvk-

I have been working with the Sony A-230 for the last couple of days and I must say that quite honestly I have been impressed with the A-230 DSLR. The Sony A-200 series have an excellent viewfinder, but no live view. For me, live view is not a priority.

You might want to check into that other thread at the top of the list and see some sample images from the Sony A-230 DSLR

Have a great day.

Thank you for your input.

May I ask as to what thread you were referring?

The thread is called "what point and shoot should I buy." As you can see it has had a lot of action.

Also I have another amateur DSLR question for you all.

Will any DSLR Lens work on this camera? Are the lens universal? Or will I have to buy only the Sony lens?

Thanks.

edit: Thanks Sarah.

I am sorry to say that lenses are not universal. On the A-230, you can use any KM AF lens, the Sony lenses, and third party lenses from Sigma, Tamron, and Tokina. That amounts to a whole lot of lenses.

As an addition/clarification to Sarah's post - third party lenses will work, but you must make sure that they are made in the same, Sony mount. The various third party lens makers may or may not make a particular lens in every different type of mount.

Ok, Thanks. I would like to invest a good deal of money in a very good Macro lens and good telephoto lens eventually, but I'll start to look now. In the mean time....

Also how good is the lens that comes with the A230 standard?
Hows the Macro?
Hows far away does it take pictures?
(Any Samples?)

Thank you.

Actually the Sony 18-55mm lens that comes with the Sony A-230 is a very good lens. It is sharp, contrasty, and very able.i think that you will be impressed by the Sony Kit lens.
