Default Best lens for distance

My granddaughter is a cheerleader for the University of Texas and I want to be able to take good sharp pictures of her from up in the stands. What lens would you recommend for speed and action. Thanks

What camera do you have?

How much do you have to spend?

Will you be in the stands right above the sidelines where the cheerleaders will be performing, or will you be closer to one of the end zones?

Default lens for distance

I have a Canon 20D but am looking to get a new camera checking out the Canon ESO T1i Mostly will be in the stands in the section above the cheerleaders. Amount of money????? depends. I have been looking at the Tamron 70-250 f3.5 to 6.5 lens.

Never heard of it.

The Tamron 55-200 Di-II LD would be a good choice, and it's not very expensive. The Tamron 70-300 Di LD is longer, so it might work better for capturing some of the game as well.

What lenses have you already tried for this purpose?

Default distance lens

Actually my daughter is the one that goes to all the games and she has a Nikon, not sure which one but I do know it does not have interchangeable lens. She has asked me to help her get better pictures so am doing the research for her. Will find out for sure what she has. The times I have gotten to go I have used my canon 20D with a 17-85 f1.5-4.6 lens. Of course I had to enlarge them on my computer and there was no quality. So if you have any suggestions for my daughter- camera and lens we would appreciate it. They are not allowed to carry in monopods etc.
thanks, Betlou
