Default Compact for older user

I wonder if anyone can help. My mother-in-law, who is 79 and very active/alert, would like a digital compact for Christmas.

I am unfamiliar with the compact market, being a pro user of DSLR kit.

What I'm looking for is a camera that would be simple to use [she has doubts about her ability to assimilate new technologies], is compact but not too fiddly for elderly fingers to navigate round, user friendly and has a good quality lens. Low light/high ISO performance isn't an issue.

All ideas gratefully received. I am UK based, so if you know that a particular camera has a different name/model number over here, please include that to avoid me getting even more confused than normal.

Slioch-

I gave a very good friend who is 84 a Canon A-2000 recently and she has had a great time with her new camera. She loves it and has already produced some excellent photos with it. She loves animal shots and landscapes.

Have a great day.

Mtclimber- many thanks for the advice. Spookily, my mother-in-law's surname is also Joyce. Must be a good omen!
