There is no comparison between a DSLR and a point & shoot because of optical quality and versatility of a DSLR. Of course there is extra cost and weight to carry around. You will not regret of buying one. I always carry my faithful Sony DSC-V1 in my bag for traveling. I have this camera since 2005 and still loving it because it's capability of using an external flash. I recently upgraded to a Canon XSi DSLR.

We each have to make our own, well studied and researched, decisions. Make a decision that pleases you , and will be best for you in the long term, that is the important issue in this thread.
