Default Camera for a student

I need to find a camera for my son that wants to get into photography. I would by an SLR but the starting price seems to start at $500 with a shorter lense. So I thought a pro-sumer digital with a high zoom. But I want enough manual settings for him to learn. Am I looking at this right. Some suggestions on cameras to start looking at would be great.
Thanks!

Welcome to the forum. We're glad you dropped by.

If you want a new camera, you might begin by checking out the Panasonic FZ-35.

If a used camera is OK, take a look at E-Bay. They have some Panasonic FZ-18's, and FZ-28's. There is also the Kodak Z-1012 camera as well. All offer full auto and manual controls with an EVF viewfinder.

Have a great day and a Happy Thanksgiving!

Canon SX-10, Sony H-50, and a Sony H-7.
