The Canon S-90, G-11 and the Fuji F-70 do much better with less noise at numerically high ISO settings of of 800 and 1600. Unfortunately the G-10 is prone to showing a great amounts of noise at ISO 800.

Attached please find a photo sample for the Fuji F-70EXR camera at ISO 1600, no noise reduction software was used.

I've a chance of a Canon SX10 IS second hand. It has f2.8 and Digix 4 processing.
Any thoughts as to whether this is good at high ISO ?

Hi Kevin,

It is OK at high ISO and the f2.8 is only when at the very wide angle, after that it goes quite quickly to f5.7 so reducing the light getting in to the camera to 25% of at the widest setting.

Here are ISO 800 and 1600 sample shots so you can see the noise.

ok. Given the rapid fall off of the lens lets skip that one.

I think I'm down to the Canon S90 and the Panasonic FZ35. I'm relying on specification from the Abe's of Maine (also seem cheapest)

The FZ35 has slightly better wide angle and better zoom. Aperture starts at f2.8 worst is f4.4.

The S90 has very similar wide angle but not such a good long zoom. Aperture starts better at f2.0 but falls off to f4.9, so presumably is worse at say 50mm (35mm equivalent).

FZ35 manages 5 fast burst frames/sec at standard resolution, S90 only manages 0.6 frames per sec which, given I want to take shots of dance, is probably the clincher.

So. Anything I've missed on the Panny FZ35 that will cause me problems?

i don't think the fz-35 is the ideal p&s for this type of work. despite its robust features and nice lens, it cannot compete with the canon's or even panasonic's own lx3 at higher ISOs. it shows alot more noise in the shadows and applies a pretty heavy noise reduction at anything over 400. there are examples of this on many forums, etc on the internet. it is better than previous models in this class, but still not an ideal low-light camera.

now i am sure someone will come on here and argue that their fz35 is fine in low light. well, everyone's definition of fine is different. the fact is though, it is noisier than the s90/g11, by a considerable margin.

I surely do agree. The Panasonic FZ-35 tops out at ISO 800, whereas the Canon S-90 and G-11 can easily use ISO 1600, and on the G-11, ISO 3200 in a pinch.

ok, the lx3 also does a fair burst speed of 6 frames per second so I think we have a winner.

that is so soooo wrong... 6fps would best most sub-1000$ dslrs...

it is 2.5fps up to 4 shot burst. or 1.9fps unlimited.

and the zoom only goes to an equivalent 60mm on the lx3. compared to the 105mm on the s90 or 140mm in the g11.

you may want to rethink your winner.
