Sony 230/330 or Nikon d60/3000

Ok, I'm looking for something as a newbie to this type of camera. I'm wanting to stay under $600. Target has the Sony 330 on sale this week and then additional savings if you buy another lens and flash.

My aunt has the D60 and loves it! The store here only has the body of a D60, so then he told me about the 3000.

I'm looking for something that I can use w/a 1 year old that's a fast mover and then my older daughter dances and plays softball. I've always used a Sony but I've heard great things about the Nikon.

HELP!!!!

This for me is always a very difficult area to advise as budget will be a limiting factor when you have quite a few requirements that can need specialist equipment.

Shooting your 1 year old isn't going to be a major problem with a kit lens and on board flash.... external flash is better but not essential.

Shooting the dancing will almost certainly require a lens above the standard kit if you want sharp shots. It will depend on how far away you are sitting, the lighting etc, but I would expect needing to use a prime (fixed focal length not zoom lens), with a wide aperture (this lets a lot of light into the camera) so you can freeze the action.

For the softball then something in the 70-300mm range is likely to get you going, this will depend on how close you can get to the action again. If you are not shooting in daylight then this will cause another major problem and big costs to get shots under the lights.

I would work out what is the most important and what areas you want to invest in first.

The Nikon cameras do have a possible problem which is they don't have a motor to drive the focus in the body. This means that certain lenses which you may or may not want to use will only be manual focus.

I would add to the list the Canon 450D to this list although I'm not sure of the price in the US.

For shooting the 1 year old, I agree with Mark1616 that either camera should do reasonably well.

For softball, you'll need a long lens, and the Tamron 70-300 Di LD is a good choice. It's relatively inexpensive, and better than anything else in its price range. It's available for both the Sony and the Nikon.

The dances are a problem. Sony has large aperture medium telephoto lenses that are excellent, but they start at $1,370. Nikon has large aperture medium telephoto lenses that are more reasonably priced, but they won't autofocus on the D60 or the D3000.

I'll be shooting more of the 1 year old and softball than dance. They have one large recital each year!

So do you guys say Nikon or Sony?

Between the two, I'd pick the Sony.

I'm down to 3. The price really isn't that big of a difference. It's just making the decision.

Sony A230 $399 and get the 55-200 lens for $99............$499

Nikon D60 body $399 and a 18-200 lens for additional $200.........$599

Nikon D3000 $499.............................................. ..........$499

The a230 a good deal, they no longer have the a330?

JimC Dec 24, 2009 9:13 AM

Yes, the A330 is still available. It's a bit higher priced. But, it has Live View with a tilting LCD. The A230 doesn't get Live View. But, it's got a larger optical viewfinder compared to the A330.
