I went with the panasonic cards since that was a good local deal.

Well the package came in a box which was fine, although the thick clear plastic bag that had the camera bag in it did smell quite a bit. The rebel kit contents were individually wrapped and those plastic bags did smell. The plastic side of the camera strap and the rubber-like grip on the lense are what are smelling the most, perhaps because they either just absorbed it very well or one of them is the cause. I'm just guessing at PVC plastic, I don't think other plastics smell as much.

The panasonic is a very good card, did you get a class 6 or class 10 card?

My particular copy of the 50-200 wasn't the greatest - it was OK but softer than I liked. The 55-300 is a noticeable improvement over the 50-200, though my first copy of the lens was decentered (which seems to be unusual for this lens - I don't know of anyone else who's complained about it). I sent it into Pentax for repair, and sooner than expected, I got a new lens. This one is excellent, a very nice lens.

You are referring to the 50-200 here?

No - 55-300. In my experience it's the better lens, and others seem to think so, too.

I got the class 10!

I talked to canon about the strong smell which they believe to be quite unusual. They had suggested exchanging the camera for a new one.

That is a very good card. It will have no issue in burst mode or in hd video. 4 or 8gb?

An exchange is an idea if the smell does not come out.

Yeah for the max fps I probably won't use the highest size for that, and it'd only be for short things. I'll focus on learning to take shots mostly!

I exchanged my camera today and this kit smells way better. There was no blast of fumes like that last box. In this kit the camera bag that comes with it wasn't wrapped up with a thick clear plastic bag, so that could have been the culprit. Or perhaps it was just placed somewhere unfortunate and soaked up some exhaust of some kind. Oh well, I'm very happy now!
