Default Canon Powershot sd780is/sd1200is/sd850is

I am trying to decide which Canon Powershot to purchase. I had pretty much narrowed my choice down between the 1200IS and the 780IS until one of my friends was bragging about their SD850IS.

Do they still make the SD850IS? How does it compare in cost to the other two that I have mentioned?

Also..... I have just entered semi-retirement, and I want to start photographing nature. And we are talking on a very amateurish level....

Of the three mentioned above, which camera will be best for taking on that new hobby.

NOTE: I know there is better equipment to use with that hobby, but I do not want to invest too much at this time because this hobby may die a quick death. If I become obsessed, then I will look into more expensive camera equipment.

Welcome to the Forum. We're glad you dropped by.

Among the three SD series cameras mentioned, the SD-850 has the best image control and sharpness. The appeal of the SD-780 is the HD video, and for the SD-1200 it is the unique smallness of the camera that accounts for its appeal.

For bird and nature, most users want more zoom such as the Canon SX-200 will provide or even a SX-20 for it maximum of 20X optical zoom to be able to reach out and get the desired photos from a distance.

Have a great day.

I agree with Sarah, have a look at the SX200 or SX20 for nature photography, you will appreciate the extra zoom range. And the SX200 isn't much above the others in price.
