Default should I buy a new camera?

I am going on vacation abroad in a few days. I have a Canon Powershot A700 I bought 3 years ago. Would a new camera in the $175 range, like a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS15K be an improvement, or another camera in the $175 range, or am I better off sticking with the Canon? I am far from a camera expert, just a point on shoot person. Thanks.

If you're about to go on vacation and you want to take a bunch of pictures, the time to buy a new camera would have been a couple of months ago.

You already know how to use your A700. Buying a new camera with only a few days to learn how to use it means you'll probably miss more than a few shots.

On the other hand, you may have plenty of time to learn how to use a new camera while waiting in line at security checkpoints.

Default Panasonic FS-15 Camera

If the camera would add to the enjoyment of your holiday, I would surely not hesitate to purchase it. The FS-15 is a fun camera that has received very good reviews. At least for me it would add to the enjoyment of my holiday.

I don't really see that you are going to gain much by getting the Panasonic. The A700 is already a pretty tidy performer. The main benefit is a slightly wider angle lens on the Panasonic but you lose focal length at the long end so you won't have as much reach. Yes there are more pixels on the Panasonic but unless you are printing really big then you won't even start to see a benefit. For me there is not enough jump between the cameras to get the upg.

... and maybe come back after your vacation. Then we can help you pick a new camera when you've got time to learn to use it before you have to use it.

make sure you have enough memory cards and last time I checked (3 months ago) you are limited to two battery packs on your carry on luggage........ If you need to carry more than 2 battery packs then put the others in your checked bag.
