Default Change of heart

After a few days to think on the Sony H20, I have changed my mind. I am going to take my D40 to Ethiopia instead of buying the H20 to take. I know the D40 will still produce better pictures and be faster as well. This is a trip of a lifetime. I don't want to sacrifice image quality.

Now my focus has shifted. I am thinking ahead to after we are back from Ethiopia. I would like a small pocketable camera. One that is under $175..preferably $150ish. One that takes okay video. My budget is that low because I have about $250 total that I am allocating to my photography purchases and I have decided to also get an SB400 flash for my D40.

The camera would mainly be used for up close shots so I am not worried about the optical zoom or flash range. However, I am concerned about the speed by which it focuses. Is that too much to ask for in my price range? I was looking at the Lumix FS15, but it seems it may be a bit slow to focus.

Any advice or recommendations would really be appreciated.

Jewey-

The addition of the SB-400 to your D-40 and taking both to Ethiopia, sound logical to me. The FS-15 is a good little camera, but as you have already noted it will be a bit slow on the focus. You are honestly asking more in terms of features that the price niche provides. You may have to come up to the $200 level.

Have a great day.

I found the factory refurbished SD780 for $159 on Adorama. Do you think this would be a wise choice?

It not a bad deal, and there is nothing wrong with a factory referb. Helen form adorama explained in another thread the factory referb process. And you get a years warranty.

the sd780is is a nice choice if you can live without a wide-angle lens.

Whoa! The SD-780 is nice and small and it does good videos. However the still images are below par.

But is there anything in the 150ish range that has a wide-angle lens?

Jewey-

If price is the hinge point in your decision, then the Canon SD-780 is a good choice. It has good HD video, but so-so still photos. I have ordered a Panasonic ZR-1 and will be able to post photos from it around 01/20 for you to see.

Have a great day.

Congrats, The feeling you get with that one call is like nothing on earth! For us it was 4 1/2 years the first time and 2 1/2 years the second time. Wife was caught off gaurd both times and cried for hours with joy. Take plenty of pictures. I hope you have a great trip.
