if your mom is going safari she will want something with reach.

Panasonic FZ-35
Canon SX20IS

offer alot of reach and good image quality.

the canon offers a little more reach 20x (560mm equiv) compared to the panny's 18x (486mm equiv), but does so at a cost of being a little bit larger in physical size.

Hards has an excellent point, I have been on safari. And your want allot of reach since sometime the thing you want to photo really do not want to come up to you. Or you may not want those big teeth to get to close to you. So more reach there better.

But there is time when your subject will me more then happy to get close for you to shoot. It happen to me Krugar national park in South Africa. A baby elephant decided to block our truck and decided to strut his stuff for us for about 20 min. It was a wonder experience.

They are pretty good point and shoot camera. The SX200 is more a compact point and shoot, the H20 is a bit bigger more of a jacket pocket P&S. Both have HD, which is a nice feature on safari. When the baby elephant decided to show off. We were able to shoot a shot movie with our point and shoot camera. HD was not out yet. But we have the memory on video now.

Just something to consider.

If your mom's safari do stop to shoot some big cats in their pride, the park rangers will make sure that they keep allot of distance for safety. So If the SX200 zoom has more reach then the H20. I would go with the SX200. But I will let the experts let you know which has a longer reach, the sx200 with 12x or the h20 with 10x, as I really do not know the particulars.

the h20 has the longest reach with an equivalent focal length of 380mm, but sacrifices the wide-angle lens to do so (only 38mm). the sx200 is a bit of a compramise giving you a decent 336mm equivelent tele and a better wide-angle (28mm)

for safari, having the additional reach of the h20 might be useful, unless she plans on also taking alot of landscapes.
